On Friday 22 March our apprentices, several employees and managing director Jürgen Gottwald, technical director Thomas Grossinger and apprenticeship officer Stephanie Goldfuß set off for din-Sicherheitstechnik in Linz.
din-Sicherheitstechnik has made it its task to help people escape in emergencies by means of light and illuminated signs.
On arrival at the company site in Linz our apprentices and employees were warmly welcomed and given drinks and coffee. Refreshed, we moved on to the large lecture room, where a presentation about the company and an introduction to safety lighting gave us a first insight.
Afterwards we split into small groups and din staff led the Gottwald party through the building to the various stations. The first station of the tour consisted of booths showing the product range, where the individual functions and the versatility of the products were demonstrated. At the next station an engineer explained what it takes to design an emergency light until it is ready for market. Another station was production. From laser cutting to 3D printing of the emergency lights, we were given a broad insight into how they are made.
One of the most exciting stations was the smoke room: a completely black room in which the light was switched off to simulate an emergency. Switching on the emergency lighting made it immediately clear how important such lighting is during a power cut. One room further on we experienced for ourselves how helpless you are when a room fills with smoke. At first you could still orientate yourself by the emergency light at the end of the corridor. But once the smoke had completely filled the room, there was no chance of making anything out. The last station of the din tour was the light laboratory, where it is tested whether the lamp actually performs the functions required of it.
Finally there were schnitzel rolls to keep us going on the journey home and a pleasant get-together with some of the din staff.
An enormous thank-you to din-Sicherheitstechnik for a great day and the fascinating tour of the company.
