We take sustainability seriously

|3 min read

Our hotels are well booked despite Covid and the insects are flying in and out like mad. There are purpose-built nest boxes for the birds too, with plenty of room inside.

WHAT ONCE BEGAN SMALL HAS GROWN INTO SOMETHING BIG.

Our company was founded in 1979 as a two-person business; today – 42 years later – more than 250 employees work here.

Over the past decades, however, sustainable growth mattered to us not only in terms of employees but became our declared aim in many other areas too.

Because: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987)

SUSTAINABILITY BEGINS WITH RETHINKING

Empty words and loose promises do not count for us. We follow words with deeds and put many small projects into practice step by step . Day after day we work to make our future more liveable and to think sustainably.

OUR OWN BEE MEADOW

Because bees are, ecologically speaking, the superstars among all pollinators, we value these creatures highly. They pollinate almost 80% of all cultivated and wild plants and are, alongside cattle and pigs, one of the most important farm animals. Every year we give thousands of bees a home on our flower meadows and are rewarded with honey . Butterflies, bumblebees and other pollinators feel quite at home with us too.

GOTTWALD INSECT HOTEL

Our hotels are well booked despite Covid and the insects are flying in and out like mad. There are purpose-built nest boxes for the birds too, with plenty of room inside.

Snakes and lizards can retreat into our reptile refuge, an overgrown pile of stones, at the Melk site.

ON THE WAY TO A PLASTIC-FREE FUTURE

With the help of sparkling water makers we save plastic mineral water bottles , and we have plastic bottles and plastic bags in paper bins completely banished from our offices .

ELECTRIC CARS

Anyone who needs a pool car gets into an electric one and sets off. After the journey the batteries are recharged at our own charging points.

PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM

The PV system on the roof of our headquarters considerably reduces the electricity we draw from outside and stands as a symbol of the sustainable low-energy construction in which the headquarters was built.

WATER STORAGE

A rainwater cistern helps us store water and reuse it for the car wash.

IT TASTES BEST AT HOME

Because home cooking with regional produce simply tastes best, our hard-working cooks pick up the wooden spoon once a week and conjure up a regional, freshly cooked meal for the whole workforce. The vegetables in particular do not travel far : in summer our raised beds, vegetable beds and greenhouse supply us with all sorts of good things. Our employees can also help themselves to regional fruit in season.
