Your large appliance as a reliable companion

|3 min read

After only a few years many household appliances seem to give up – regular use leaves its mark. As a shortened service life can also be the result of a lack of proper care and handling, we would like to give you some valuable tips on how to protect your appliances from wear and loss of performance.

8 tips for a longer service life for your large appliance

1. Choose the position carefully

With fridges in particular, make sure the ventilation openings are not blocked. Blocking them can put excessive strain on the appliance and cause it to overheat, with irreparable damage. It also drives up electricity and energy costs unnecessarily. Make sure the ventilation openings are unobstructed and always free of dust.

2. A matter of precision

Washing machines are precision machines with numerous sensitive sensors. Poor levelling can mean that detergent builds up in the inlet, the drum bearings wear out faster, shock absorbers and springs cannot do their job fully, imbalances are less well compensated, or the machine starts to move about. It is therefore essential to have the appliance levelled by a professional when it is installed, or to level it yourself with a spirit level.

3. Read the instructions

Before using it for the first time, always read the manufacturer's instructions, to avoid technical faults caused by incorrect handling and cleaning.

4. At full power

To be gentle on the laundry, people often wash at low temperatures. To remove residues and germs completely, the washing machine should run a 60-degree programme without a load at least once a month. A standard cleaner can be used for this. Doing so stops the machine starting to smell.

5. Let it breathe

It also helps to leave the drum door and detergent drawer of a washing machine open for a short time after each wash, to prevent mould and odour-forming bacteria. It is worth checking the door seal after every wash for a build-up of dirt and small objects.

6. Better hygiene – lower costs

For hygiene reasons the fridge should always be cleaned at regular intervals. It is advisable to clean the door seals with warm water and a little soap. A seal that is not intact means the appliance has to cool harder and uses more electricity. The freezer should also be defrosted regularly, as this saves energy and money. Defrosting is particularly easy in the winter months: when outside temperatures are below zero, the frozen supplies can simply be stored on the balcony or terrace in the meantime.

7. Do not wait too long

After using the oven it is advisable to clean it with a damp cloth while it is still warm. If you would rather save the time, look out when buying an oven for one with a self-cleaning function.

8. Repair rather than replace

Some problems can be solved (contrary to the manufacturer's information) with the help of tutorials on the internet, but above all by our service staff. Our repair specialists are there to extend the life of your electrical appliances.
