We were glad to support three pupils from HTL St. Pölten with their diploma project – the development of an electric bicycle – . Eren Kaya, Niklas Pointner and Tobias Schwarz converted a conventional old bicycle into an electric one. Gottwald contributed the motor needed for it.
The final presentation took place on 9 June 2022 at HTL St. Pölten, which of course we did not want to miss.
The pupils can be extremely proud of the project and of their successful presentation – we are glad to have been a small part of it.
About the project
An old bicycle was used and modified into a pedelec powered by a self-built battery. Battery cells from the car maker Hyundai supply the motor. A digital display was also fitted to show speed and battery status. A custom housing was developed to protect the battery cells from corrosion, accidents and so on. A 500 W brushless DC motor is the core of the drivetrain. In general the bicycle reaches a maximum speed of 25 km/h with a range of 450 km and a battery capacity of 3.2 kWh . These figures describe average behaviour when using pedal assistance and the throttle.
The project makes the point that electric mobility can be applied to old bicycles too, and should certainly be used as an environmentally friendly alternative to combustion-engine vehicles.
