On 1 October 2021 International Coffee Day celebrates its 20th birthday. In many countries around the world, coffee associations founded this day to draw attention to matters surrounding the great pick-me-up. In the 19th century Vienna was the coffee house city par excellence. People met there not primarily to drink coffee, though, but to read the paper, hold conversations, play chess or simply do nothing at all. Before long the Viennese coffee house culture had spread across the whole of Austria and become known far beyond every national and international border.
Once coffee, always coffee
Austrians still reach for the coffee cup gladly and often today. Almost 85% drink coffee regularly, which makes it the country's favourite drink. By international comparison we are at the top, consuming an average of 162 litres of coffee a year. That is about two cups a day. Our favourite? The Verlängerter!
