Off on holiday with peace of mind

|4 min read

Summer is holiday time – whether it’s a short break or a long-haul trip to exotic destinations. For burglars, however, the two summer months are peak season. That is why it is important to avoid any obvious signs that might tell a burglar your house or flat is empty.

Here are our 10 tips for you:

1. Make it look like someone’s home

When you are away, make it look as if someone is in. You can do this by installing timers or TV simulators, for example. Having lighting simulators, roller shutters, TVs and radios switch on and off at pre-programmed times goes a long way towards making people think you are at home.

2. Close windows and patio doors

Windows and patio doors are the most common points of entry for burglars. Especially in the warmer months, we often tend to leave doors and windows open. The number one measure against theft is therefore to close your windows and doors.

3. Light up outdoor areas

With strategically placed lights with motion sensors, you deprive burglars of the cover of darkness. Light therefore plays a key role in protecting a property and significantly reduces the likelihood of a break-in. Motion sensors are now very affordable and definitely pay for themselves.

4. Empty the letterbox

If you are away for a longer period, ask a neighbour you trust to empty your letterbox regularly – nothing says “on holiday” quite like an overflowing letterbox. Wilted flowers and plants are also signs that nobody is at home.

5. Alarm systems: an extra layer of protection

Alarm systems offer convenience and security, as they can also be remote-controlled while you are out and about. Visible flashing lights and a siren are often enough on their own to deter burglars. However, an alarm system should not replace mechanical protection, only reinforce it. Besides dummy devices and alarm-system stickers, you can of course also opt for fully-fledged, working alarm systems.

6. Reinforce your windows and doors.

Investing in technology often pays off. Upgrade your windows and doors, whether with security locks or reinforced window frames. That way, you will be able to relax far more on your well-deserved holiday.

7. Get advice

Not sure which products are right for your needs? Professional advice can make the decision much easier. Contact details can be found at the end of this article.

8. Security through a clear view

The common belief is that the harder it is to see into a property, the harder it is for burglars. Wrong! Overgrown properties make things easy for burglars. High hedges and walls may give a feeling of security, but in reality they pose a major risk. After all, no wall or hedge is so high that burglars cannot climb over it and then work behind it unseen and undisturbed. Ensure good visibility around the parts of your home that are particularly easy for potential intruders to reach.

9. Think before you post on social media

We love sharing special moments with the people closest to us. So photos of us packing our suitcases, waiting at the airport or relaxing at our holiday destination end up online. That is an open invitation to any burglar! We therefore recommend posting holiday photos and updates only once you are back home to avoid this security risk.
