In summer above all, the harvest season for fruit and vegetables is at its height! 🥕🥦 What if you could enjoy your fresh, home-grown food in winter too?
With our 8 tips on freezing properly we want to help you preserve the valuable vitamins and nutrients in your food:
8 tips and tricks for freezing properly
- Quality is decisive For the best possible result you should use fresh, high-quality food – ideally from your own garden.
- Clean, dry containers To avoid the risk of freezer burn, use special dry, clean freezer bags, tubs or containers that are suitable for freezing food.
- Less is more Divide your food into portion-sized amounts before freezing. That way you can defrost only what you need later and stop valuable food going to waste.
- Protect food from condensation Hot or warm food should be cooled completely before freezing, to prevent condensation forming.
- Mind the freezer temperature Make sure your upright or chest freezer is set to the right temperature, ideally -18°C or colder.
- Freeze the right foods Bread and rolls keep very well in the freezer. Tip: press the air out of the bag before sealing it. Rice, especially jasmine, basmati and patna rice, freezes easily and keeps well for later. Tip: it is best to undercook the rice slightly, as it reaches the perfect consistency when reheated. Vegetables should be washed and cut into small pieces before freezing. Some varieties benefit from being blanched as well, which helps preserve their colour, flavour and quality. Vegetables with a high water content turn mushy when defrosted and are barely edible, so they are not suitable for freezing. Dairy products curdle or turn grainy after defrosting and should therefore not be frozen.
- Defrost in the fridge The safest method for minimising bacterial growth and preserving the quality of your food is to let it defrost slowly in the fridge.
- Do not keep it too long Do not leave food in the freezer for too long – a rough guide is six months to a year.
